About the doctor
Prof. Kai Neben is an outstanding German oncologist and hematologist who heads the Department of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Medicine at the Mittelbaden Clinic Network in Baden-Baden. His many years of experience, in-depth knowledge and numerous scientific achievements make him a leading specialist in the treatment of cancer.
Education and professional path
Prof. Neben began his academic journey in 1980, entering the Domschule Schleswig Gymnasium, from which he successfully graduated in 1989. After completing his alternative service at the Rendsburg District Hospital, where he provided nursing care from October 1989 to December 1990, he continued his education at the Julius-Maximilian University in Würzburg, Bavaria, where he studied from May 1991 to November 1997.
During his studies, Professor Neben actively participated in international exchange programs, among others:
- 1989-1995: six-month internship in a children’s village of the Evangelical Church in Brazil.
- August-September 1995: internship in the Internal Medicine and Obstetrics Clinic at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.
- May-August 1997: 16-week internship in the Department of Surgery and Intensive Care at the University of Rochester, USA.
After graduation, Prof. Neben began his professional career in January 1998 as an intern and senior physician at the University Hospital Heidelberg, where he worked until April 2001. During this period, he gained valuable clinical experience and laid the foundation for a further scientific career.
From May 2001 to April 2004, Prof. Neben was a research fellow at the German Institute of Oncology, where he worked in the Department of Molecular Genetics under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Peter Lichter. This position was part of a fellowship with the German foundation “José Carrera Foundation for the Cure of Leukemia”.
In May 2004, he joined the Medical Clinic and Polyclinic V, specializing in Hematology, Oncology and Rheumatology under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Anthony D. Ho, where he worked until May 2013.
Scientific achievements and recognition
Professor Neben completed his PhD in the specialty of internal medicine in July 2007. In November of the same year, he received an additional specialization in palliative medicine and in October 2013 in laboratory medicine. In January 2014, he was awarded the title of professor at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg.
His scientific background includes more than 95 publications in the Medline database as of December 2016. His main research topics cover molecular diagnostics, stem cell transplantation, multiple myeloma and syndrome of unknown primary focus (CUP-syndrome). He is a member of the German-speaking Multidisciplinary Myeloma Study Group and actively participates in the commission for advanced training in palliative care at the Medical Association of District Physicians in northern Baden.
Membership in professional organizations
Prof. Neben is an active member of several leading medical societies, in particular:
- German Society of Hematology and Oncology (DGHO).
- Working group of senior hematologists and oncologists in hospitals (ADHOK).
